The most widely adopted PET tool is Tor, the onion routing network that the U.S. Meanwhile, technologists have become dedicated to developing different technologies that protect users' privacy, which are known as Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) (Wang & Kobsa, 2008). In order to protect users' information privacy, scholars from different fields have made an effort to conceptualize information privacy in a concrete way (Solove, 2008 Nissenbaum, 2009). This has raised public awareness about personal freedom and information privacy. Daily, information about online users is collected, analyzed, and even shared without the public's informed consent. The ubiquitous and constant activity of online data processing has made mass surveillance much easier to achieve and personal privacy more difficult to sustain. When corporations and governments share our information with each other or our information is breached by cybercriminals, as online users, we become the most vulnerable party. As Schneier ( 2015) articulates in his book, through online surveillance, some corporations can manipulate the advertisements we see and the prices we are offered, and governments can censor, discriminate, and stifle free speech worldwide. Facebook can determine our sexual orientation even if we do not explicitly state what our sexual orientation is. Google has an automated process to predict what we want to search. For example, many individuals may not be aware that records users' online purchases, which the company can use to predict when customers are sick or even pregnant. While these technological advances have had an amazing and positive influence on our daily lives, they collect, share, and process a massive amount of data about users' daily activities. Today's Internet technologies have given users a convenient way to communicate, connect, and share their daily lives with others around the world. ![]() In addition, Tor-relay operators report on their views about anonymous networks, the challenges they face, and how their belief in providing an opportunity for everyone to access information without interference or censorship is a key component of their volunteer participation. Our study results reveal that one of the main motivations for these volunteers is to advocate and provide privacy for online users. To explore this volunteer community's motivation for providing their services despite the risks, we conducted an online survey. However, Tor Volunteers may find themselves in a tough spot at times because Tor network is often monitored by law enforcement, which makes this PET community different from any other open-source initiatives. The Tor network is supported by a group of volunteers who contribute their resources to sustain the availability and quality of the service. One of the most well-known PETs is the Onion Router (Tor) network, which provides users with online anonymity. To protect users' information privacy, several initiatives have been developed to provide Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs). The ubiquity of personal data processing has raised public awareness about the infringement of information privacy. Internet technologies have made mass surveillance prevalent and much easier to carry out, while at the same time making personal privacy more difficult to protect. ![]()
